Did you have a good view down wind? The most interesting things I have learned yote hunting have been by back tracking the ones seen / or shot, and looking for tracks the next day to see if they came in but were not noticed... Its amazing the distance they will go out of there way to circle down wind. Also, they will crest a hill or exit a tree line by just getting to a point where there eyeballs are able to see the area the noise is coming from. Any movement, or scent of danger and they are gone and you never new they were there. Don't worry about a set up or two that don't produce.... You gotta keep pounding. once you get a few down you will gain the confidence to believe in your set ups.... Personally, I would opt to let the dying rabbit squeal bring them in... I have not killed a yote with a howler, but have had good success using the howl to locate a pack... Also, don't call during the day much. They don't come in good during the day, but they do get educated sitting back listening. Move around a lot.

Nice work Dan. Congrats man. I am still looking for my first yote of the year but i've only been out twice looks like i need to get back out there.
You do need to get out there now... They are really active right now with breeding. I have been seeing them out all over the place. Even seen one in the parking lot at work.

Yes, I was set up on a fenceline between to open fields, and the cover I expected them to come from was to the SW, they would have to show themselves in the open field, or come directly up the wooded fenceline The most interesting things I have learned yote hunting have been by back tracking the ones seen / or shot, and looking for tracks the next day to see if they came in but were not noticed... How long do you call, do you have pauses in between or do you just let the call play continuoulsy? I have not killed a yote with a howler, but have had good success using the howl to locate a pack... I started calling just after the sun went below the horizon.
The electronic call is put about 50 yards away so they are not fixed on the shooter... My next of advice would be to have a second shooter about 100 / 150 yards down wind to shoot them when the circle.
How long do you call, do you have pauses in between or do you just let the call play continuoulsy?
Not sure what works best, but letting the call play for 5 minutes then shutting it off has seemed to have good results. About 1/2 come in when its playing, and 1/2 come in right after it stops. I think sometimes if they get to much calling it makes them stop and listen and they figure out its a trap. By stopping and everything going quiet I think curiosity and the3 possibility of the free meal dissapearing brings them in. Most of the ones that come in after the call is a stopped come in within 2 minutes of the call stopping, so I believe they were "held up" just out of my site.
There are a lot of guys better than me at yote hunting, just giving my two cents.... Keep at them, and edventually you will start pounding them.

Thanks Dan, I'll keep at it. In one of the marshes, I was walking through, I saw ALOT of yote tracks, probably more than deer. There is some open grassland to the north of the marsh, and when I get a southernly wind, I'll give it either an early morning sit or a late evening try. Can't wait.
